Handwoven mudcloth and mudcloth print can look similar in a photograph, yet they are different kinds of fabric. To choose well, find out whether you are buying a woven textile or a printed design and check how that difference affects your project.

The main difference between mudcloth and mudcloth print is how the textile is made and decorated. Traditional Malian mudcloth uses cotton cloth and a dyeing process involving mud and plant preparations. Mudcloth print carries a printed design inspired by the traditional textile.

To understand what you’re buying, check three things separately: fiber content, construction, and how the design was applied.

At Fabrics USA Inc., our African mudcloth collection includes products described as handwoven cotton. Here’s how to read the details and choose a piece that suits your project.

What Is Traditional Mudcloth?

Mudcloth, also called bògòlanfini, is closely associated with the textile traditions of the Bamana people of Mali.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes narrow cotton strips woven and sewn together, then decorated using plant extracts and mud. Designs can carry meaning within this tradition. Learn more through The Met’s mud-dyed cloth collection entry.

The Smithsonian also describes Malian mudcloth production using cotton cloth, iron-rich mud, and natural dyes. Read about Malian mudcloth at the Smithsonian.

“Mudcloth” therefore describes more than a pattern of lines, dots, or shapes.

Handwoven and Mud-Dyed Describe Different Things

“Handwoven” tells you how the fabric base was made. It does not, by itself, explain how the design was added.

Likewise, “100% cotton” identifies the fiber. It does not establish that the fabric was handwoven or traditionally mud-dyed.

If the making process matters to your purchase, ask about both the weaving and the decoration.

What Is Mudcloth Print?

Mudcloth print is fabric carrying a printed design inspired by mudcloth.

Its base may be cotton or another material. Its weight, feel, and care requirements depend on that fabric and its finish. A printed pattern may resemble handmade markings while being produced through a different process.

A print can work well when its dimensions and fabric properties suit your project. Read the description carefully so you understand the material you’re choosing.

Mudcloth vs Mudcloth Print: A Practical Comparison

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What to compare	Handwoven, traditionally mud-dyed cloth	Mudcloth-inspired print
Production	Combines handwoven cloth with a mud-and-plant dyeing process	A design is printed onto a fabric base
Texture	Yarn thickness, weave, and strip joins can affect the surface	Depends on the base fabric and finish
Variation	Individual pieces may differ in markings, dimensions, and construction	A repeated print may offer greater visual consistency; inspect the actual fabric
Dimensions	Check the measurements of the individual piece	Check width, selling unit, and available length
Cutting	Plan around strip joins, borders, and the complete design	Plan around print direction, repeat size, and motif placement
Care	Obtain instructions for the specific cloth and its dyes	Follow the individual fabric’s care instructions
Project suitability	Assess weight, drape, joins, and condition	Assess weight, drape, finish, and intended use

Texture and price alone cannot establish how a fabric was made. Clear production details and information about the maker are more useful than appearance alone.

What to Look for at Fabrics USA Inc.

Our Handmade Mud Cloth – Chevron-White/Black is described as Malian mudcloth. Its product information lists:

\nComposition: Cotton, with the description specifying 100% cotton.
\nConstruction: Handwoven.
\nColor family: White and black.
\nSelling unit: One piece.

Another item, Handwoven Cotton Mud Cloth – Brown, also identifies cotton, handwoven construction, and a per-piece selling unit.

Need precise measurements for cutting? Ask for the actual usable dimensions. Each piece should be planned according to its own measurements.

Fabrics USA Inc. also sells fabrics by the yard and in other lengths. Check the selling unit for your selected product; the mudcloth examples above are listed by the piece.

If you’re comparing materials for the same project, browse our broader African fabric collection. Compare each fabric’s specifications rather than assuming different textile types will behave alike.

How to Inspect a Mudcloth Listing Before Buying

Read Beyond the Product Name

Look for answers to these questions:

What fibers are used?
Is the fabric handwoven?
How was the design applied?
Where was it made?
Is information about the maker available?

Words such as “handmade,” “African,” or “mudcloth style” do not answer every question.

Ask for Useful Photographs

A full photograph shows the overall design. Close-ups can help you examine:

The weave and yarn texture.
Any seams joining narrow strips.
The front and reverse.
Edges, borders, and areas you plan to cut.
Repairs, wear, or loose threads where relevant.

Ask whether the photographs show the exact piece you will receive or a representative example.

Visible strip joins can help you understand construction, but photographs alone cannot confirm the dyeing process or place of manufacture.

Separate Natural Variation From Condition

Variation can be part of handmade work. It still matters to know whether a piece has holes, weak seams, repairs, or uneven edges that affect your plan.

For example, a border you want to feature on a cushion may need to remain intact. A repaired section might be easy to work around in one layout and unsuitable for another.

Which Option Suits Your Project?

Cushions and Decorative Panels

Start with the finished dimensions, then add the seam allowances required by your pattern.

For handwoven cloth, position your pieces around strip joins and important design areas. A contrasting backing lets you feature the cloth on the cushion front while using another suitable fabric behind it.

For a print, check the scale of the design. A small cushion may show only part of a large repeat.

Clothing

Consider weight, drape, softness, and bulk before choosing a garment style.

A substantial handwoven cloth may suit a design that accommodates its structure. A lighter printed fabric may suit a different silhouette. Let the actual material guide your decision.

Show your tailor the fabric or detailed photographs before cutting, especially if the garment will cross several strip joins.

For broader advice on matching materials to your project, read our African fabric buying guide.

Bags and Accessories

Think about where the fabric will bend, rub, or carry weight. Your design may need lining, reinforcement, or interfacing.

Check whether joins or decorative areas fall near handles, corners, or other stressed sections. A handmade appearance alone does not establish how a fabric will perform in a heavily used bag.

Wall Displays and Upholstery

A wall display can preserve the overall arrangement of a cloth. Consider its weight and ask about an appropriate mounting method.

For upholstery, confirm suitability for the intended use. A fabric marketed for home décor is not automatically suitable for a frequently used chair or sofa.

Before You Make Your Choice

Keep these details beside your project plan:

Fiber content and construction.
How the design was applied.
Usable dimensions and selling unit.
Condition and placement of strip joins.
Care requirements.
Suitability for the finished item.

The right choice depends on the fabric’s properties and what you want to make. When shopping at Fabrics USA Inc., save the product link and ask our team about any missing measurements or production details before ordering.
